How to Make An Old Chair Into Nature's Beauty (With Detailed Instructions)

"You have the potential to make beautiful things.  Yes, you do."

I found and bought this old chair years ago at some estate sale.  I loved the back on it and wasn't sure at the time what I would do with this...

I finally decided to leave it as is (no painting), and to plant flowers into the seat.  First things first, I cut off all the old caning that I could...

I knew I needed chicken wire and coco fiber from a garden store.  Other than that, I had no idea how to do this other than I knew I would have to staple the wire to the bottom.  I played around on the interest and found bits and pieces of information.  Do you have any idea how difficult it is to form a bowl shape chicken wire without a bowl?  We were at the cottage and the closest thing I had to the right size bowl was actually my stainless steel colander, so that's what I used...

BTW, I purchased the smallest size formed coco bowl that I could.  The chicken wire has a mind of it's own, and having only two hands, I used this heavy book to help hold it down while I tried shaping and cutting it.  Obviously, it's cut with wire cutters and I have my own staple gun.  I did get Mr. Cottage to help hold things as we stapled the wire to the underside of the chair...

I re-trimmed the wire closer to where the staples where, but there were lots of very sharp wire still hanging lose.  Nothing like grabbing the chair to move it and getting nailed with a wire in your hand!  So I went around with needle-nose pliers and carefully wrapped them...

I then went around the base one more time (OK, maybe several more) to make sure the corners were well secured and everything looked smooth and fine...

Voila!

Ta-Da...

Because summer is flying by too fast and flowers are pretty much picked over for this year, we bought a hanging pot and just put it into the seat after I removed the hanger...

Next year, I want to plant flowers into the seat with vines that will also grown down and really fill up the seat and chair.
