Our Own Coffee Cafe

A good laugh is sunshine in the house

What a week this has been with router issues.  Our one router was a good 4 years old and had been starting to give us issues with loading too slowly.  Long story short, we just received a new router yesterday from Amazon and I just installed it today.  I didn't dare start to write a blog post until we got this issue resolved because I just knew I would lose connection somewhere along the way...

Anyways, I wanted to share what I did in our kitchen a few weeks ago.  We had an empty spot above the bay window and I decided it needed something, but nothing too bold.  Michael's came out with some new galvanized metal letters and I decided that's what was needed.  I know the word "EAT" is used in a lot of kitchens as part of the décor.  I'm not one who wants to do what everyone else is doing, so I decided to do the word "CAFE".  I went to Michael's to buy the letters and discovered that the letter "F" wasn't available and would not be available.  Apparently there's a few letters that were never produced and "F" happened to be one of them.  Too bad if your last name started with an F and you wanted to put it somewhere.  So I thought I would do "BISTRO", and after buying the letters and getting home, I knew that I really wanted CAFE...

I did a Google search for metal letters and found some at Home Depot that were the right size.  I ordered them and waited for it to arrive.  After carefully measuring and pounding nails in the wall, I kid you not, but not one of the letters hung straight.  There was only ONE hook on each letter.  You would think the A would have hung correctly with it right at the pointed top, but it didn't.  And the backs of each letter weren't solid.  They were open and there was no way to put anything sticky on the backs to help hold them straight.  So I took them all back to Home Depot and ended up ordering my letters from Anthropologies.  I read in the description that each letter had two locations on the back for hanging.  Needless to say, it was quite a bit more than what I started out paying to Michael's, but in the end I was so much happier.  I started out tracing each letter onto newspaper print and marked where each spot on the back was for hanging...

I also measured from one hanging hole to another and worked on spacing the letters out.  I know this photo isn't the best, but I worked on taping the newspaper print onto the wall and double checked if it was straight and accurate before I started pounding in the nails...

Because we use our laptop on the kitchen table, it's sort of like a coffee café...

At this point, I've also decided not to put up a valance on this window.  I haven't had curtains by any of our kitchen windows in years and I like the look of it being simple.

  1. I love big letters and it is even cooler that they are galvanized tin! It looks fantastic there. I know that I want some of these, just not sure where I would put them yet, but this gives me a lot of ideas. Great job!
