I know we've done a few little things backwards, such as having the dining room when you come in, then the living room and finally the kitchen. But it works for us and remember, our cottage is small; so it's only a few steps from the kitchen to our table. As soon as you walk in and go beyond the entry and dining room, you'll see our fireplace...
Again, we didn't buy anything special for the mantel when we first moved in. We had the barn owl painting for years and thought it would look great above the fireplace. The bronze statue is named "End of the Trail". When my father retired, my parents moved to Arizona and every art painting or sculpture they purchased, revolved around the southwest. The totem pole on the other far end, Mr. Cottage and I purchased in Alaska. And the most recent item added, is the owl sitting on the mantel. Mr. Cottage bought it on clearance at Pottery Barn. We have a little "thing" going with owls...
The buffalo on the hearth was purchased years ago, when our kids were much younger; and the pottery was another one of my parent's purchases in Arizona. As you can see from the hearth, we have an insert for the fireplace, but to be honest, we've never used it. Once it starts to get cold, we head home. Our cottage is built on a slab and the walls are just log, with no other insulation. Mr. Cottage purchased a couple of efficient electric heaters, one for the main living area and the other for the bathroom, for some of the cooler nights and mornings we sometimes get in Michigan...
Remember this rocking chair? If not, you can read about it here.
We love how it looks in our cottage, especially next to the snowshoes...
Our main living area isn't that big, but then again, neither is our cottage. I have a few more projects ahead of me. The ugly plaid chair will be a winter project. I've got to make new covers for it. Also, the coffee table was one of our first pieces of furniture Mr. Cottage and I purchased after we married. He would like to have it refinished and I would rather paint it. There's already more than enough wood inside of our cottage...
I purchased this lovely little piece of furniture about 8 years ago. Each drawer opens up, 18 drawers total. I use to keep my paints in them, but now that I'm concentrating on just watercolors, most of them are currently empty...
We found this lamp and shade at one of the flea markets we go to...
This is when the light is on...
We are very fortunate to live on the side of the lake that has both natural gas and cable. There's parts of the other side of the lake that have to use propane and have no cable in their area. Plus, our side has one mailing address and the other side has a different one and obviously, a different school system. Shhh, don't tell Mr. Cottage, but I'm thinking about using chalk paint to update this clock...
Here's the pillow I first wrote about here. Please try not to freak out about the fur on the back of our sofa. Mr. Cottage had a chance to buy this caribou fur while we were in Alaska. We had it shipped to our house and it was waiting for us by the time we arrived back home.As a wife being married to a hunter and fisherman, I'm usually use to this type of thing.
This is an old, sleeper sofa that I made a slipcover for. Again, you can read more about it right here and the references I used, here...
Miss Molly's favorite place to curl up for a nap...
Tomorrow I have something special to share with you and on Wednesday, you'll see our tiny, little kitchen.
