Life Is Like A Roll Of Toilet Paper

Do not regret growing older. It is a privilege denied to many.

I'm going to be just a tad honest here and tell you I'm taking an online course called How To Build A Blog You Truly Love with the wonderful Liv Lane.  For this course we were told to write a blog posting where we revealed a bit of ourselves, our fears, and/or to get out of our comfort zone.

So I'm going to talk about something I really try to avoid, like my age!  I know some of you are aware that I retired early and that Mr. Cottage and I just spent our 7th winter in Florida.  I've been on a real roll these past few years, especially this last year.  I announced yesterday on this blog that it was my 1 year blogiversary.  If you haven't already done so, please go to this posting now and enter for my first ever giveaway for some of my artwork.  You can enter until this coming Sunday evening.  Anyways, what I'm getting to is that I've entered the world of blogging with so many younger people.  Geez, for some of you, I'm old enough to be your mother, and in some cases, your grandmother!  But I have to be honest and tell you that for me, age is just a number (now if only my aches and pains would just realize that!).

Now you're probably wondering what this posting has to do with toilet paper.  No, it's nothing dirty, like what you've probably been thinking.  You know when you go to use a new roll of toilet paper, it goes rather slowly because the roll is so large; but as you get closer to the end of the roll, it spins faster and next thing you know you're out of toilet paper.  Well, that's kind of what life is like, especially when you get older.  The older you get, the faster the time seems to go.  I wrote about this in one of my other blog postings once, that it seems like I wake up in the morning and I'm drinking my coffee, the day flies by and next thing I know it's morning again and I'm drinking my coffee.  Remember the movie Groundhog Day?  Growing older is sort of like that!

Now for the revelation...I'm going on Medicare in October.  YIKES!!  I'm going to be 65 years old!  There, it's out in the open now, but I honestly have a mind that thinks I'm only 45-50 years old.  I wrote my motto in the sand this past winter...

If you believe you can do something, truly believe it, then regardless what obstacles are in your way, you can achieve your dreams.  For me it has always been art.  My favorite paintings have been with watercolors, but I always heard how hard it was to work with.  So it wasn't until three years ago I decided to try it and guess what?  I fell in love with it and it with me.  I may not have 40 plus more years to get very experienced with it like many artist my age have been doing since majoring in art while in college, but I'll do what I can with what I can, while I can.

Just because us older folks are just that...OLDER, doesn't mean we rock in our rocking chairs from morning to night.  Our son, #2, says we're never home and he can't ever get a hold of us.  Well, maybe that's because Mr. Cottage and I are always on the go wherever the fun is taking us...

December 2011
I have to admit that there are a number of times I really do wish I were only 40-45 years old, but then I remember that I would be dealing with our sons as teenagers again and I don't want to go there for anything!  So I'll happily be content where I am and just go along for this joyous ride...

I am also doing Liv's course and I find it great that we can share so many things even though our ages are so different, i don't even think about how old someone is when reading their blog!

  5. I love your picture in your hat! I just turned 50 and am adjusting to being in a new age group. For some reason I almost feel ashamed of it, but I don't know why. I hope coming out with your age is as inspiring to you as it is to me. Thanks for posting this!

  6. You look fabulous daah-ling. Your blog design is great and I love the upbeat feel of you an your writing. And I feel the same way about my grandparents (82 and 80) they are hard to get a hold of b/c they are always doing something same with my 60 yr old parents. I am looking forward to having so much fun and I am glad that you are obviously taking advantage of life. (btw I will be using the sage wisdom of life is like a roll of TP from now on)

  7. I also love the picture of you in the hat! I also love that you are embracing your age, AS YOU SHOULD! I don't know if it will continue, but despite physical changes, each decade seems to get better and better! And your art is awesome!

BTW, I love Lake Michigan and grew up in Grand Rapids. I moved to Minnesota after college. Also, I love Florida and can't wait to be a snow bird when I retire!

  8. What a fabulous shout out! Your young spirit just shines in this post!!

I have to say, your son's comments about finding you and your husband made me laugh! It reminded me of some of the recent car commercials where the adult children are feeling sorry for their parents who they assume are stuck at home eating leftovers and going to bed far too early. In truth they are out having the time of their lives!

Thank you for the powerful inspiration and encouragement!

  13. Love it! Embrace your age and rock it! Dispell the myths of what 65 should look at. We all know it's a load of bull anyway. Be as old as you feel and go for it!

  17. The next time I catch myself wishing a day away, I'm going to think about that roll of toilet paper! You've illustrated why it's so valuable to live our moments as long as we have them. We can't slow down time... but we can experience its fullness!
