Slipcover Chair Tutorial, Part 3

Asking a seamstress to mend is like asking Michelangelo to paint your garage.

Now that the pieces have been fitted to your chair, it's time to get this finished up.  Unpin the skirt pieces (D, E, and F) from the cover, and remove the cover from the chair.  With right sides together, stitch a skirt side (F) to each side of the skirt front (D) along the SIDE edges using a 5/8 inch seam allowance.

With right sides together, stitch a pleat underlay (G) to EACH skirt side (F) with a 5/8 inch seam allowance, BUT LEAVE A 1 1/8 INCH GAP FOR THE TIE (H) TO FIT THROUGH.  Measure down from the top of each piece and mark the opening for this gap at the same distance on each section of the pleat underlay...

Stitch the skirt back (E) to the pleat underlays (G) in the same way, leaving gaps at the same height as the other ones.  Finish the raw edges of the seams and press the seams open.  You should end up with one huge circular skirt...

For each tie (H), press under 1/4 inch on each long edge and one end and fold in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, press, then stitch.  Insert the unfinished ends of the ties (H) in the gaps left in the underlay seams.  Stitch the gaps in the seams.

Mark the center of each underlay (G) and line up these marks with the back corners, forming the excess fabric into an inverted pleat at each corner.  Pin and/or baste in place and press well..

With right sides together, pin the top edge of the skirt front (D) and the sides (F) to the seat (C) and to the portion of the inside back (A) wrapped around the sides of the chair back. Line up the two front seams of the skirt with the two front corners of the seat (C). Pin the top edge of the skirt back (E) to the lower edge of the outside back (B).

Stitch the skirt to the seat and back using 5/8 inch seam allowance.  Finish the seam edges, press open.  Put the cover back on the chair.  Turn up a double 1 inch hem and then machine or hand stitch.  Put the cover back on the chair, tying the ties...

  1. That looks so beautiful. I have never taken any sewing classes. My grandmother used to be a marvelous seamstress, but my mom never learned. For sure on my list.
