~Robert Frost
Some of you are aware that I just went down to Kentucky for a funeral. My cousin's wife was an extraordinary and exuberant woman. In addition to everything she accomplished during her lifetime, one of her great loves was writing, especially poetry. In honor of her, I'm sharing what was printed on the back of a handout that they gave to everyone at her service. It was written by her...
and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did...
FRIENDSHIP
Friendship is a layered kind of thing
a nesting of events
graduating in size
stacked inside
one another
like mixing crocks.
A circle in which our voices reverberate
a clay pot - a silver bowl
holding our power
visioning our dreams
guarding the secrets
of our true self.
A fragile, fragile, spider web
intuited instantly
created slowly.
If not torn in a mad moment,
we live in its glistening shadow
a lifetime.
A looking glass of possibilities
reflecting us as we are,
as we long to be.
Giving us a
magic
glimpse of self.
Friendship is a layered kind of thing.
Friends eventually become our kin.
sometimes,
even
our skin.
