"Cruising has two pleasures. One is to go out in wider waters from a sheltered place. The other is to go into a sheltered place from wider waters."
~Howard Bloomfield
We referred to our sailboat as our floating cottage. There were weekends when we just stayed tied to the docks and other times we would go for short day trips, either on our boat or someone else's sailboat. BUT then, there were the times we actually left port and headed north in Lake Michigan. In the photo below, we were in Pentwater, Michigan. After a long day of sailing, we would stay in port for a couple of days to let the kids unwind before we took to sailing again. You can see the pool I brought with us and blew up for them, the strollers, and I always bought new toys or books to give them along the way...
I think the next few photos are of our stay in Pentwater. We were actually tied up in their hoist area, versus a regular dock, only because I think that's all they had left to give us...
The shoreline in Michigan, along Lake Michigan, is filled with sand dunes and really cute ports to pull into. To be honest, when we cruised, we usually had to motor sail because the winds were always coming from the wrong direction. We'd put in long days to get to whatever port we were trying to reach and whenever we left that port, we left early in the mornings...
The photo below was taken in Leland, Michigan. It took us a week to get there, we stayed for one week, and then a week to get back to Holland. We sometimes cruised with other friends who were in their own sailboats...
Mr. Cottage said that this was in White Lake, Michigan...
We sailed for 13 years and they were wonderful. I could never figure out why anyone would get out of boating (when we first got into it), but in our case, the kids got older and had part time jobs and life just kept on changing. I have the last posting tomorrow on our sailing days. You won't want to miss some of the spectacular photos!
