Hawaiian Sweet Roll Ham Sammies

It's so beautifully arranged on the plate - you know someone's fingers have been all over it.                                                                                   ~Julia Child

I found this one on Pinterest a while back.  It's very similar to one that I made a number of years ago with regular rolls or buns, but this is using the yummy Hawaiian Sweet Rolls...

HAWAIIAN SWEET ROLL HAM SAMMIES

I package of 12 Hawaiian Sweet Rolls
1 onion, minced
1 stick of butter
3 tablespoons Dijon mustard
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
3 teaspoons of poppy seeds
1/2 pound shaved ham
8 sliced of swiss cheese

  1. Melt butter in a small skillet and add the onions.  Combine mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and poppy seeds into onions and butter.  Simmer for several minutes.
  2. Slice the rolls as a group lengthwise and place bottoms in an aluminum foil lined 9 x 13 pan.
  3. Spread 3/4 of onion mixture on the rolls in the foil, and then layer first the shaved ham and then the sliced cheese on top of them.
  4. Top with the roll tops.  Spread the remaininbg ionion mixture over the top.  Cover with aluminum foil and refrigerate until ready to bake.
  5. Bake covered with foil for 20 minutes on 350 degrees.

These are the rolls that I used...

I just made these the other day after Mr. Cottage came home from the hospital.  Because I didn't want to overdue it with him, I used a spreadable margerine in place of butter, less onions and mustard and no poppy seeds...

I put the butter in a measuring cup and melted it first in the microwave to make sure I had 1/2 a cup, which is equivalent to 1 stick of butter...

This is what it should look like after layering everything and putting the top rolls on...

After you put the top rolls on and spread the remaining mixture over the top, cover with the foil...

After I removed this from the oven, I was able to move the huge set of rolls to my cutting board where I cut them, following where each roll is. This would be great to make for a crowd and you could make several batches of it.  I think you might want to add this recipe to your stash!
