Veterans Day, A Gift From WWII

Freedom is never free.

I think I get my love of photography from my father.  Long before he married my mother, he loved taking photos and some of his earliest ones that I'm aware of were taken during WWII.
This is an album that he put together from his time spent in the Army...

I keep it out in our guest room, but this album is now around 70 years old and just within the past few years, the black paper has started to crumble and deteriorate.  My father trained in Santa Ana, CA...

but then was shipped to the South Pacific where he spent most of his time in Okinawa.  This is a photo of him on the inside of his album cover...

His album is full of old photos that he took during his stay in the South Pacific...

of his friends...

and even though I don't show it, he has photos of their ride in from the main ship to the island.  Unfortunately, many of the photos are starting to show their age and I've decided to scan all of them once we return from Florida...

He also has many photos that he took of the citizens of Okinawa...

As well as many old postcards...

My father died in 1990 and his wish to be cremated and interned in Arlington National Cemetery was granted.  After my mother died, I found this flag sealed in a box that said it was from his burial ceremony at Arlington.  I'm not one to store things away and forget about them, so I bought a flag case and have it in our living room where I can see it all the time.

In addition to my father, Mr. Cottage is a veteran and our oldest son is currently serving in the Army.  I just want to honor all our veterans for serving their country proudly by giving you all a big THANK YOU!

  1. What a loving tribute to your father. I also have WWII photos that my uncles took, many from Japan. All of my veterans have passed on and I also have their flags. It's a beautiful reminder of who they were and how they shaped who we are. Love those fish, by the way.
