Our Own Little Elf

“Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies!”
                                                                       ― Francis P. Church

Not having young kids for awhile, I guess I've been somewhat out of the "loop".  Everyone keeps talking and mentioning about "the elf on the shelf".  From what I gather, the elf sits on the shelf so it can keep it's eyes on the kids and report back to Santa whether or not the kids have been good.  We never had an elf on our shelf when our kids were little.  Instead, Mr. Cottage and I always told the kids that we just saw an elf peeking in our window.  When the kids would look, we would tell them they just missed it.

A number of years ago, I found what I thought was a rather cute elf at a craft show and bought him to take home with us...

I thought he was so cute, I even brought him down to Florida with us, where he sits on his own little shelf watching over Mr. Cottage and myself.  I was talking the other day with a friend and she was telling me about her three year old grandson.  He has an elf watching him at home, but I had to laugh when she told me that her grandson told his mother that he didn't think the elf was real.  When the mother asked, "why not?", he told her it has a tag on it.  Smart little boy!

So what about you?  Elf, no elf, Santa, no Santa?  We'll be spending Christmas in Virginia with our oldest son and his family.  I talked with him yesterday and was asking him whether or not our grandkids still believed in Santa.  Our grandson still does and he was pretty certain that our granddaughter does, too.  It's so much fun to see young kids on Christmas morning and I'm really looking forward to spending this Christmas with them.
