And The Magic Word Is.....FREE

Today is a new day.  Even if you were wrong yesterday, you can get it right today.

Back when Mr. Cottage and I bought our condo, we started having contractors stop over to give quotes.  We ended up replacing all of the shiny brass:  lights and any hardware such as handles, knobs and towel holders.  I also wanted to get rid of the standard looking oak cabinet that was on the wall in the bathroom, and replace all interior doors; along with painting and removing wallpaper...

One of the first things we easily got rid of was the cabinet on the bathroom wall.  I put an ad on Craigslist and within a day or two it sold and was gone.  Once all the brass hardware and lights were taken down, I put another ad in, with very low prices.  Not even one inquiry.  I called Habitat, and they weren't interested.  Finally Goodwill said they would take them.

Once the doors were removed, I put another ad in Craigslist at $10 per door.  I finally had someone who wanted one.  When she and her husband came out, after paying me, I asked if they wanted any more for free.  They took two more prehung doors and a few of the bi-folds.  We still had more doors left and no one wanted them, not Habitat, Goodwill and even a wrecking company that had a store where they sold salvageable items to the public.  When Mr. Cottage called them, they said they would need to see them and decide if they wanted them or not; and if not, then we would have to pay to have them put into the dump.  Mr. Cottage said he would cut up the remaining doors and put them into our trash, a bit at a time...

I really hated to see these good doors go to waste.  Then it hit me.  Just give them away for free.  I put another ad in at Craigslist and listed it under "free stuff".  Within an hour or two at the most, I ended up removing the ad.  I had so many inquiries of people who wanted them.  I ended up contacting a person who wanted the two prehung doors and if I wanted to get rid of the bi-folds, he would take them, too.  At $5 or $10 an item, I should have thought about listing all of the above items earlier under free stuff.  Our new doors are now in and all the old doors are finally gone.  Because I don't mind painting trim, I told Mr. Cottage I would paint all the trim...

I love the new doors.  All of the prehung came from a company that was having a special sale at the time these were ordered and we got solid doors vs hollow for no additional cost...

I'm still in the process of painting all the trim and settling into our home, but I will be sharing more before and after photos with you in the near future.
