Keeping It All In The Family

Our most treasured family heirlooms are our sweet family memories.                                                                  ~Unknown

My sister-in-law and her husband sold their house within two days!  Unlike us when we moved, she decided she didn't have enough items for an estate sale.  So this past Friday and Saturday they held a moving sale.  I told her weeks ago I would help her with it and take photos to post on Craigslist for them.  So Thursday I went over to take the photos and couldn't believe what I saw she was selling...

In their garage, sat this beautiful Amish made rocking chair.  If you've never sat in one of these, you don't know what you're missing.  I couldn't believe she was selling it.  It's been in their cottage for a number of years, but now this small cottage is getting made over as a permanent house for them.  Even though they will be adding on, she said it's still going to be small and they only have room for so many things, this not being one of them.  I had taken the photo for Craigslist and showed Mr. Cottage.  Next thing I knew, Mr. Cottage called his sister and told her we are buying it.  In fact, as I write this, Mr. Cottage is taking this chair to our red painted cottage, where we know it will look fantastic.  I'll take some photos of it there and will share with you shortly.

The morning of the sale I saw these two beautiful, old wooden folding chairs sitting in their driveway.  I found out they had belonged to her parents and she ended up with them.  They had been at their cottage...

When Mr. Cottage arrived at the sale, to pay for the rocking chair, he saw these and asked my sister-in-law the cost.  She said she didn't care if they sold or not, so she had the price up there a bit.  When I got home Friday evening, Mr. Cottage asked if the chairs were still for sale.  Saturday morning, he was on the phone to her and said he would buy them.  He later told me he wanted these because he grew up with them and wanted something from his childhood memories...

I had also noticed a couple of boxes with old hardcover books in them.  I flipped through the pages and contemplated, because I love old books.  But as I looked closer...

look what I discovered!  1921, OMG!  I'm thinking that someone may have given these books as a gift for when my mother-in-law was born.  I found out all these old books had been my mother-in-laws...

Look at the styles the girls are wearing...

This was written in the book shown above...

And this was shown in another book...

My sister-in-law said she's had them for years and didn't know what to do with them.  I had to get a few for Mr. Cottage...

The great thing about all of this is my sister-in-law and her husband can still rock in the rocker when they come to our cottage, and sit in the wood chairs when they visit us at our condo.  We'll use them as extra seating when we need to.
